Control what reaches you, and get alerts on your phone

Set a notification level per conversation, mute for a while, add keywords, and install Linbis on your phone so urgent things reach you away from the desk.

Notification settings in chat are per conversation, on purpose. Going quiet everywhere is how people miss the customs hold; quieting one busy channel is how they keep the two that matter today.

Set the level for one conversation

  1. Open the conversation and select the notification control in its header.
  2. Choose a level:
    • All messages β€” every message notifies you.
    • Mentions only β€” you are notified when someone @-mentions you, or when a message contains one of your keywords. Everything else stays silent.
    • Nothing β€” no notifications from this conversation.

The setting applies to every surface at once: the unread badge, the in-browser banner and the push to your phone all read the same rule, so a conversation you muted cannot buzz your phone at 3am.

Mute for a while

From the same menu, mute for a set period or indefinitely.

A timed mute shows the time it actually ends, not "muted for 8 hours" β€” which is true for one instant and misleading for the next eight. When the deadline passes the conversation un-mutes itself; there is nothing to remember to switch back on.

Keywords

Add words you always want to hear about β€” a customer name, a port, a vessel, your own surname as customers spell it. In a Mentions only conversation, a message containing one of your keywords notifies you as though you had been mentioned.

Edit keywords from the same menu. The list you see is the list that gets saved, so add or remove one at a time and let each change settle.

The badge

The count on the Chat item in the main sidebar is your unread mentions plus the red flags waiting for your acknowledgement. It answers one question β€” is anything waiting on me β€” which is why it is a single number rather than two.

It refreshes about every 30 seconds. That is faster than the other sidebar counts because behind this one there is a person waiting for a reply.

Get alerts on your phone

You are logged in at a desk; the thing that needs to buzz is in your pocket. Open the phone alerts setup from chat.

On a computer, it shows a QR code. Point your phone's camera at it to open Linbis there, then follow the steps for your device.

On Android, enrolling is one tap.

On an iPhone, Apple only delivers web notifications to a site that has been added to the home screen and opened from that icon. So:

  1. Open Linbis in Safari.
  2. Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  3. Open Linbis from the new icon β€” not from Safari β€” and enrol from there.

There is no way to prompt for this on Apple's behalf, which is why the steps are manual.

Prove it actually works

Enrolling means your browser registered and Linbis stored the registration. It does not prove a notification arrives. Use Send a test in the device list to find out β€” before you rely on it for an escalation.
